Immerse yourself in the Natural Environment through Mixed Media Nature Journaling

Storytelling with Nature

Creating personal connection between you and the natural world through Visual Storytelling.

  • simple steps

  • beginner friendly

  • calm, creative and nature-led

Imagine ...

Slowing down, looking, listening, immersing yourself in Nature. The sun is shining, the bees are buzzing!

You're feeling relaxed, connected for the first time in ages. You can feel the tension releasing, you're healing from the inside out.

Now, what if you could translate what you see AND feel into your personal story on the pages of your very own Mixed Media Nature Journal?

This is what I will help guide you through in this course - Storytelling with Nature.

Whether you are a newcomer to nature watching and art, or already have some experience, this course will satisfy your craving for a slower, more mindful way to connect with nature and express yourself creatively.

This Course is for you if ...

🍃 You are a Nature Lover

🍃 You want to connect more deeply with Nature

🍃 You feel a bit lost and want to reconnect with Yourself

🍃 You're an Art Newbie or Oldbie

🍃 You love Art and want to Learn New Things

🍃 You find Yourself staring at The Blank Page

🍃 You want new forms of Inspiration

Explore & Gather

Go outside - sit, walk, listen. What can you see? How does it make you feel? How does it smell?

Take a sketchbook, take your camera. Start noting down your observations.

Now start gathering for your journal - flowers, leaves, feathers, seeds, whatever catches your eye.

If you can't gather, take reference photos.

Remember - there are no rules.

Learn & Create

This is where I will guide you through making your concertina journal, and, of course, filling your journal with your Nature inspiration.

Not only will you learn new ways of looking and noticing, and skills based techniques, you will also learn more about your foraged specimens, and therefore more about your natural surroundings.

Look Back & Reflect

Our Journals are finished!

And they look great!

How do you feel?

Accomplished? Calmer? More connected?

How you feel depends on what you set out to achieve, so any positive feeling is a win!

Because there are no rules except your own.

My friend and I did your course.

I found it not only relaxing but truly enjoyable.

We did the course at her home, using her garden.

It was so much fun yet both our journals were so very different.

I want to thank you so much for your lessons,

techniques and our time that was so well spent, relaxing but full of giggles.

Many thanks

Lisa and Helen

Welcome

This is where we will say Hi 👋🏻 and I'll explain the course, go through the materials we'll need, and I'll show a few examples of what we are setting out to achieve.

Lesson 1 : Making a Concertina Journal (2 parts)

Part 1 - Using the downloadable collage kit we'll create a masterboard on one side for the journal cover, and use layered random watercolours to create the background for the inside of the journal.

Part 2 - We'll assemble the journal by cutting up the masterboard and attaching it together using washi, packing tape, or whatever you have on hand. (inspirational YouTube video included)

Lesson 2 : Making Camouflage Journal Pockets

We'll create journal pockets that camouflage and become part of our journal pages to hold the slide specimens, journal cards and seeds envelopes that we create.

Lesson 3 : Making Vintage Style Specimen Slides

After gathering bits of nature from around us - flowers, leaves, feathers - we'll press them and make vintage style specimen slides using, where possible, recycled materials.

Lesson 4 : Preserving Specimens in Tissue Paper

We'll also preserve our foraged bits of nature using a layered tissue paper technique. Labelling them will help us learn more about what surrounds us in our environment, and therefore creating a deeper understanding and appreciation of it, whilst developing our sense of belonging.

Lesson 5 : Saving Seeds in an Origami Pop up Envelope

After talking about how to save seeds, and the importance of seed saving, we'll create a little package for them which will be kept inside an origami pop up envelope.

Lesson 6 : Creating a template for the Journal Layout

For those of us (yes, me too) a little hesitant to jump right into our journal and create a cohesive story of our garden or environment, we'll create a template which we can then tranpose into our journal.

Lesson 7 : Sketching out the Journal

This is where we'll transfer our template into our journal - we'll be sketching with graphite, so we can erase bits if we need too! I'll be using real flowers and leaves from my garden, but don't worry, you can use photo references if you need to!

Lesson 8 : Painting in the Journal (3 parts)

Part 1 - We'll use watercolours to start painting our stories in our journal. I'll cover some simple beginner friendly watercolour techniques, and a few problem solving tips.

Part 2 - We'll continue painting in our journal, building up layers to create depth. We'll also explore gelli plate printing to add a different dimension to the way we can capture nature in our journals.

Part 3 - We'll add the finishing touches to our journals using watercolours and ink pad stamping. Plus, we'll use actual plants to stamp directly into our journals using acrylic paint.

Lesson 9 : Using Coloured Pencils we'll add highlights and accentuate areas of our journal that we want to emphasis.

Lesson 10 : Assembling the finished Journal

We'll add the journaling cards, slides, tissue specimens and seed packets to our journal pockets, and do a final flip through - and give ourselves a well deserved pat on the back!

Farewell

We'll do a recap on what we've learnt, not only about art techniques, but about new ways of seeing, noticing and engaging with nature and our natural surroundings. PLUS - I'll tell you all about the BONUS lesson!

Lesson 10 : BONUS - it's a surprise!

What Students are Saying ...

,,

Your no-sew journal building blew my mind! I'm off to the pantry to gather supplies to start building my own. And I love the way you talk through your plan (or no plan!), letting us know the reasons behind what you're doing. Everyone needs a little more "no fussiness" in their lives! Overall a great exercise for observing what's alive!

~ Lauri Hawley

I have wanted to start a nature journal for a long time and never knew where to start so your course is brilliant for helping to promote the first steps in doing so, and overcoming the blank page syndrome. And the techniques you've shared so far are all very inspiring and engaging, and some of them I haven't seen before that are unique to you.

I am watching the videos from my bed dealing with chronic fatigue and pain. I am sad that my mobility prevents me from getting outside in nature as I would like. I was drawn to this offering in hopes that I could connect with nature in some way. For now watching the videos is keeping me connected to creative energy and a good distraction from physical discomfort.

Thank you for offering this opportunity. I am grateful for your generosity.

Why I Created this Course

mHi, I'm Dawn, an Artist and Naturalist who loves Nature mJournaling & Mixed Media - so I decided to combine them both mtogether.

mI grew up in a small seaside town surrounded by Nature, and mtoday live on the outskirts of Ballarat, Victoria, Australia at the mbase of an extinct volcano. I am lucky enough to reside on munceded Wadawurrung Country, and am surrounded by natural minspiration.

mI love to explore different ways to express and engage with mnature - enter Mixed Media!

mFor many years Nature has been a refuge and has helped me movercome many traumas in my life - some big, some small - but mthe natural world is always there for me.

mI created this course because I wanted to share with others the mhealing and connective qualities that nature has to offer,

mwhether it be quietly sitting in the garden and absorbing the msounds, or discovering new walking tracks to learn more about mmy environment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to have my own Garden

Absolutely not! You can tell the story of your local park, your residential streetscape, or even make up your own story with reference photos from books or the internet. You can also use the collage pack as inspiration to tell a story.

What if I can't get outside to gather inspiration?

There are many ways to gather inspiration - books and magazines, tv documentaries, photos on the internet. You could use the collage kit as reference pics too.

What Supplies will I need?

While I am using specific supplies during the lessons, you can make do with whatever you may have at home. For example, I am using watercolour paints. If you don't have any you could water down some acrylic paint, or even use coloured pencils. A full list of recommended supplies IE what I am using, will be supplied with the course as a downloadable file.

Is this beginner friendly?

This course is suitable for all levels - beginners, those who are familiar with art techniques but may feel a bit rutted or want a new way of seeing their surroundings, and artists that may want to try something new - there is something for everyone.

How long do I have access to the course?

Once enrolled you will have unlimited lifetime access to the course. It is yours to stop and start, and to revisit whenever you need a little creative nudge.

Can I share my work and ask questions?

Yes. You’ll be invited to join the NatureNoons FB community, where you can share what you’re making and connect with other artists. I'll pop in too from time to time to answer questions and enjoy your journals.
